Archeologists believe the necklace was born during the stone age about 40,000 years before than previously believed. April 2004, scientists were excavating a cave in South Africa discovered forty-one mollusks that may have been strung as neck jewelry about 75,000 years ago.

Before this discovery the oldest known necklace to have been found about 30,000 B.C. They are made mostly of shells, bones, stones, animal teeth or claws, strung on a thread. Basically the same concept is used today though there are some variations .In 2500 B.C. gold was starting to be used in neck jewelry. Gold neck adornments and chokers have been discovered at the Royal Grave of Ur. They are in what is now known as Iraq. 2000 B.C. was when Sumerian bead neck jewelry started to use alternating patterns of colored stones and gemstones and metals such as copper or silver.

Ancient Egyptian neck jewelry evolved from simple stringed beads to complicated patterns and include the 'broad collar' and pectoral type. They were worn by both sexes, mostly royals and wealthy citizens. They were often buried with their dead owners.

During the Classical Greek period from about 480 to 300 B.C. most necklaces were three dimensional pendants. They were mostly in the form of heads, seeds, or acorns. They were suspended from a row of flat elements usually some type of rosettes.

Alexander the Great in 356 - 323 B.C. conquered the Orient. Gold was plentiful throughout the Greek Empire. It was often used on making in necklaces and other types of jewelry for several centuries. 

In Ancient Rome the wearing of jewelry was frowned upon. Laws regulated how much gold could be worn by women or buried along with the dead. From about the first century on, Roman Jewelry began to distinguish itself. Gemstones came into use and were usually cut in circles or rectangular shapes.

In the end of the second century gold piercing techniques were invented. It produced a lace like quality in gold neck jewelry. The favored style of the time was a chain of differently colored gemstones connected by gold links.

In the second and third century it became popular to wear multiple necklaces all at the same time. The types of neck jewelry sometimes indicated the level of wealth or class of the wearer. Necklaces were very popular in whatever form could be made. Over the next few centuries the popularity of wearing of necklaces waned significantly. In the late 14th century necklaces started to regain their popularity due to fashions décolletage.

Making A Beaded Necklace Or Bracelet For Beginners

I make all my beaded  Neckwear  by hand, on my website I give many genuine gemstone beads to choose from so people can customize their necklaces (also bracelets & earrings). Whatever beads you might use the technique is the same, I personally use only sterling silver parts & genuine beads such as black onyx, turquoise, red coral, aventurine, amazonite (very popular), rhondonite, mother-of-pearls, freshwater pearls, etc...

I personally use only Beadalon wire which is extremely solid, it comes in many colors & variety some ticker & more solid... Much more expensive then most other wires but this is worth it if you want to make a necklace or bracelet that will truly last. Beadalon can be found in most jewelry findings online stores, Ebay, etc...

Also, you need crimps (can be found in sterling silver, plated silver & other metals) and crimps covers (to hide the crimps & give it a nice professional look). There are special pliers sold to use with crimps & crimps covers which makes the job easier but I have done it before with regular pliers well.

Start by measuring the correct height of wire you want cut it with about 2-3 inches extra to what you need. The extra will be cut at the end but will make it easier to work with & do the tips. Always have a ruler with you, it will be helpful many times. So if you want a 16" necklace cut about 18-19" long of wire.

I always start in the middle, so if you have a pendant or a centerpiece for the necklace put it on now. Make sure the bail or loop is solid. Usually I put a sterling silver ball on each side of the pendant large enough to stop the pendant from moving. Look at the bail or loop, make sure the beads you add on each side are larger. Now is time to add all the beads you want, using the ruler make sure you stop at the desired height. Also don't forget that there will be a clasp at the end which will add some height.

For the clasps, there are many on the market. I usually use sterling silver lobster clasp or spring clasp. Also you need a jump ring soldered to fit with your clasps.

So once you are done adding all those beads start ending the tip on one side. insert a crimp, then the clasp loop, then fold your wire back into the crimp. Tighten the wire so there is no loose wire between the crimp & clasp. Then squeeze the crimp shut with some pliers. Once that is done it should be solid. I always pull a little on it to double check.

Ok now you cut the extra wire on that side leaving about 4-5mm. Using the pliers you fold it over the crimp. Now grab a crimp cover open it wide enough using your finger & set it on top of the folded 4-5mm wire, covering it & the crimp. Close the crimp cover using your pliers delicately. Once that is all done one side is totally finished. Do the same on the other side using once again a crimp but of course a jumpring instead of a second clasp! Then a crimp cover again. Don't forget it must be tight at the end. You shouldn't see any of the wire. Then again don't make it too tight or the necklace will be stiff.

I hope this is easy to understand. It is quite easy to do but the first pieces you make might need a little work redone later when you get better at it.

Shop around before you buy any findings, some places are making way to much profit on people. Search for "jewelry findings" in search engines, and take a look on Ebay also, compare before you buy!

I usually use sterling silver beads of size 2mm, 3mm & 4mm. And for my stone beads I use 4mm & 6mm.

People wear vintage articles of clothing for a variety of reasons. After all, the only difference between new and used clothing is that the latter is either pre-owned (from yesteryear) or vintage (if made over 20 years ago), whatever the case may be. This is not to mention the fact that many of today's designers borrow fashion ideas from the past, with a modern twist, which brings us to one of many reasons a person would opt for vintage ties: why buy today's borrowed ideas when one can wear the original!

To Celebrate Vintage Neckties and the Eras They Represent

Every decade has offered a different style of   Jewellery Neck wear  not seen before. Skinny neck ties were worn just before World War I, muted patterns were common in the 1920's and 1930s, while bright, colorful, hand painted and novelty themes made their first appearance in the 1940's. This included pin up girls plastered both on the front as well as printed onto the back lining just behind the tip. Things slimmed down again in the 1950's and early 60's until the introduction of wide Kipper neckties in the mid 60's and into the 70's. Narrow neckwear was again reintroduced in the 1980's and it settled in at 3 ½ to 4 inches wide in the 1990's. Every 20 years or so fashion changed, but it always harked back to and built upon the first time a particular style was introduced, as a way to pay homage to the originals. Such is the case, for example, with the wild graphic 40's ties, which designer Martin Wong repeated in his "Screenplay by Martin Wong" line in the 90's.

Today's two toned stripes were first introduced in England in the late 1800's with the advent of university, regimental and club neckties. Other patterns commonly worn today were the mainstay in the 20's and 30's. Thin rockabilly's from the 50's and 60's morphed into a retro look in the 80's and are currently slimmer versions of today's regular widths. A photograph in a recent GQ Magazine showcased skinny neckwear with a panel ornament located midway up, a style straight from the 50's.

Every era started a new trend which has since been copied, but as women know already, authentic clothing by the original designers is really special and today's mass produced copy cats don't come close to the originals. The same goes for men's accessories, not to mention some designs can no longer be found unless one wears an original article of clothing.

To Go Down Memory Lane and to Wear One's Favorite Styles Again

Men of a certain generation have their favorite types of ties, many of which they wore when in high school and during their first years at work. Sometimes they save them and other times they donate them during a spring cleaning only to eventually find them in back in fashion again years later. What goes around comes around, and with skinny neckties now popular again, many men won't have to reminisce about their favorites but actually wear them again or purchase ones similar to those they wore during their youth.

Only ten years ago a secretary from London created a jewellery brand that is now a bestseller both in the U.K. and the U.S. This brand is the Lola Rose jewellery collection and it's a genuine rags to riches story.

In 2000, a lady by the name of Nicola Gewirtz was working as a secretary in London, England. On her birthday she was given an expensive piece of designer jewellery which, although greatly appreciated, prompted Nicola to start thinking how often women pay more for their accessories than the actual outfits that go with them.
